Addiction in Hawaii
While most Americans think of Hawaii as a paradise, it is not without its troubles. Beneath the clear blue waves, a history of substance use and mental illness needs to be addressed.
Each year, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) conducts a nationwide survey. In their research, they found that in the past year, 133,000 Hawaiians used marijuana, 21,000 used cocaine, and 2,000 had used heroin. Additionally, more than half of adult Hawaiians had used alcohol in the past month. Addictions to prescription opioids and methamphetamine have become increasingly common in the Aloha State.
Unfortunately, Native Hawaiians and other Pacific Islanders may be more vulnerable to certain addictions than the general population. At Providence Treatment, we have created an outpatient addiction treatment program tailored to the needs of people living in Hawaii.
