Putting Spirituality Into Practice

Spirituality has been found to have a pretty profound impact on people in recovery from a substance use disorder. Some of the perks: less anxiety, more optimism, fewer cravings and relapses. And you don’t have to be religious to experience the benefits. Spirituality is about believing in something bigger than yourself and taking the time to connect to the world around you.

Give it a try. Here are a few tips to make your every day more spiritual:

  • Put your health first. Caring for your physical health is a big part of improving your spirituality, so make an effort to stop smoking, start eating better, exercising and minimizing stress.
  • Carve out time for quiet contemplation. This could be as simple as starting a daily journal or devoting 10 to 20 minutes per day to meditation. Other ideas: Go on a technology diet and shut off that smartphone or turn off the radio while driving and focus on your thoughts. Do whatever it takes to clear the clutter and hone in on your inner self.
  • Explore nature. A peaceful hike or a little quiet time on your favorite park bench is perhaps one of the most spiritual things you can do. The idea is to fully take in the nature and wonders that surround you.
  • Be more mindful. One of the great things about mindfulness is that it teaches you stay in the moment and to become fully aware of what you’re doing and how you’re feeling throughout the day — and without judgement.
